EU - Asia Relations: Perspectives of Political and Security Policy in a Global Context

Workshop/Public Forum

14 September 2006
9h45 – 18h30

EU-Office, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung
Rue du Taciturne 38, 1000 Brussels

The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Brussels, in close collaboration with the European Institute for Asian Studies, is organising a Workshop/Public Forum on “EU-Asia Relations: Perspectives of Political and Security Policy in a Global Context” on Thursday September
14th 2006 at our office, Rue du Taciturne 38, 1000 Brussels.

You are kindly invited to discuss with researchers from Asia and Europe, as well as representatives of the EU institutions, to what extent the concept of multiregionalism operates in the context of EU-Asian Affairs and how this relationship can contribute to
achieving European security objectives.

Mr. Hervé Jouanjean, Deputy Director General, European Commission, DG RELEX, will give an incentive speech to the workshop (9h45-16h15), which will, just after the sixth ASEM summit in Helsinki, focus on the question of growing interrelations of regionalism
and security questions in EU-Asian relations. The European Security Strategy stresses the importance of an effective multilateral system and acknowledges the role of regional organisations to strengthen global governance. The need for intraregional and
interregional cooperation is becoming more and more evident.

The workshop will be followed by a public forum (16h15-18h30). Dr. Sebastian Bersick, Prof. Wim Stokhof and Dr. Paul van der Velde (European Alliance of Asian Studies) will present their latest book on ”Multiregionalism and Multilateralism: Asian-
European Relations in a Global Context”. The following discussion will be initiated by a keynote speech by Fan Weimin, Political Counsellor, Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the EU.
